AiSensy is a Meta-approved provider that gives you a dashboard, broadcast tools and chatbot builder on top of the WhatsApp Business Cloud API. This is a practical breakdown of what AiSensy handles versus what Meta charges you for, what you need before signup, how the per-message pricing shift changed the economics, and the point where a no-code chatbot stops being enough.
AiSensy is a layer, not the API
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's product. AiSensy is one of hundreds of Meta-approved providers that sit on top of it and give you a usable interface, because the raw Cloud API is a set of endpoints, not a place where your sales team can read and reply to chats.
So when someone says "we bought WhatsApp API from AiSensy", what they actually bought is access to Meta's API plus AiSensy's dashboard: a shared team inbox, contact lists with tags, broadcast campaigns to segmented audiences, template message management, a drag-and-drop chatbot builder, Click to WhatsApp ad integration, and basic analytics on delivery and read rates.
That distinction matters for one practical reason. Your WhatsApp Business Account and phone number live in your Meta Business Manager, not inside AiSensy. If you outgrow the platform, you can move your number and your account to a different provider. What you cannot easily move is your chat history, your flows and your automation logic, because those are built in AiSensy's system. Plan for that before you spend six months building complex flows.
You get two bills, and the second one changed in 2025
AiSensy charges a monthly platform subscription, tiered by features and by how many agent logins and contacts you need. Meta charges separately for messages. Most businesses discover this only after their first campaign.
And the Meta half of the bill works differently now. Until mid-2025, WhatsApp billed you per 24-hour conversation. From 1 July 2025, Meta moved to per-message pricing for template messages. Every marketing, utility and authentication template you send is charged individually, at India-specific rates that are cheap in isolation and painful in volume. Marketing templates sit at roughly 78 paise per message; utility templates like order confirmations and delivery updates are a fraction of that.
The good part: service messages are free. If a customer messages you first, you have a 24-hour window to reply with as many free-form messages as you want at no Meta cost. That single rule should shape your entire strategy. Businesses that push customers to initiate the conversation, usually through a Click to WhatsApp ad or a website widget, run their support almost free. Businesses that blast marketing templates to a purchased list pay for every send and then watch their quality rating drop.
| What you send | Who starts it | Meta cost |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing template (offers, launches, re-engagement) | You | Highest per-message rate |
| Utility template (order, payment, delivery, appointment) | You | Low per-message rate |
| Authentication template (OTP) | You | Low per-message rate |
| Any reply within 24 hours of a customer message | Customer | Free |
What you need before you sign up
Signup fails for the same three or four reasons every time. Sort these out first and onboarding takes an afternoon.
- A phone number that is not currently active on the WhatsApp app or WhatsApp Business app. If it is, you must delete that account first, and you lose the chat history on it. Use a fresh number if that history matters.
- A Facebook Business Manager account, with business verification done. Keep your GST certificate, incorporation document or utility bill ready, with the business name matching exactly.
- A display name that reflects your actual brand. Meta rejects generic names and names that do not match your verified business.
- Your first message templates, written and submitted for approval. Templates get rejected for promotional language in the utility category, for placeholder-heavy text with no context, and for asking customers to move off WhatsApp.
- An understanding of your messaging tier. New numbers usually start at 250 or 1,000 unique customers per 24 hours and scale up to 10,000 and 100,000 as your quality rating holds. You cannot broadcast to a 50,000-person list on day one.
Where the no-code chatbot stops being enough
AiSensy's flow builder is genuinely good for deterministic paths. Press 1 for order status, press 2 for catalogue, collect name and pincode, hand off to an agent. If your customer queries are predictable, this solves most of the problem and you should not overbuild.
It breaks the moment customers type like humans. "Bhai woh blue kurta jo last week order kiya tha kab aayega" does not map to a button. A keyword tree cannot handle it, so the conversation drops to a human agent, and your team is back to answering the same forty questions all day. That is the real cost, not the platform fee.
The fix is not a better decision tree. It is connecting WhatsApp to your actual systems, so an AI layer can read the order table, check the shipment status, answer in the customer's language and escalate only the genuinely unusual cases. AiSensy supports webhooks and integrations, so the plumbing exists. The work is in deciding which processes to automate, what the AI is allowed to say, where the human takes over, and how you measure whether it actually cut response time or just added noise. If you already have the API running and want that layer built for your business rather than described to you, that is exactly the scope of our AI Automations work with startups and MSMEs. Send us your current WhatsApp flow and where it leaks, and we will tell you whether it is worth automating.
Is AiSensy the right choice for you
For a small or mid-sized Indian business that wants broadcasts, a shared inbox and a simple bot without hiring a developer, it is a reasonable default. Pricing is India-friendly, support speaks your context, and Click to WhatsApp ad setup is built in.
It is the wrong choice in two situations. If you are a developer-led product that wants full control over message handling, go direct to Meta's Cloud API and skip the middle layer entirely. And if WhatsApp is only one channel in a bigger customer operation spanning email, Instagram and voice, a full CRM-grade platform will serve you better than a WhatsApp-first tool.
The decision that matters more than the tool: work out who starts the conversation in your business. Get that right and the platform is an afterthought.
FAQs
1. Is AiSensy an official WhatsApp partner?
Yes, AiSensy is a Meta-approved provider for the WhatsApp Business Platform, which means it can provision official API access for your business. It is not owned by Meta, and your WhatsApp Business Account still sits in your own Meta Business Manager.
2. Can I use my existing WhatsApp Business app number with the API?
Only if you delete the existing WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business account on that number first, and you will lose the chat history stored on that device. Many businesses keep the old number on the app for walk-in customers and use a new number for the API.
3. Do I need the green tick to use the WhatsApp Business API?
No. Business verification in Meta Business Manager is mandatory, but the green tick (Official Business Account badge) is a separate approval based on brand notability and is not required to send messages.
4. Why do my WhatsApp templates keep getting rejected?
The most common reasons are promotional wording submitted under the utility category, placeholders with no surrounding context so Meta cannot tell what the message says, and content that pushes the customer off WhatsApp. Rewrite with a full sample of the real message and pick the correct category.
5. Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
The API itself has no licence fee, but Meta charges per template message you send, and any provider like AiSensy charges its own platform subscription. Replies sent within 24 hours of a customer's own message carry no Meta charge.
6. Can I connect ChatGPT-style AI to WhatsApp through AiSensy?
Yes, through webhooks and integrations you can route incoming messages to an AI model and send the reply back over the API. The engineering is straightforward; the difficult part is grounding the AI in your actual order, inventory or booking data so it answers correctly instead of guessing.
