WhatsApp now carries ads, but only in the Updates tab (Status and Channels), not in personal chats or calls. This article explains what Meta launched in June 2025, which signals target those ads, where India and the EU stand on rollout and regulation, and why the bigger advertising story for businesses is Click to WhatsApp, not Status ads.
The short answer
Yes. WhatsApp has ads, and it has had them since 16 June 2025, when Meta announced advertising inside the Updates tab. They do not appear in your chat list, inside a conversation, or on calls. You will see them between friends' Status updates and as promoted results when you search the Channels directory.
That distinction is the whole answer, and it is the reason so many people search this question and come away confused. If you mostly live in the Chats tab, you may genuinely never have seen an ad on WhatsApp. If you scroll Status daily, you have.
There is a bit of history worth knowing here. When Jan Koum and Brian Acton sold WhatsApp to Facebook for about 19 billion dollars in 2014, the app had a pinned note on its blog titled "Why we don't sell ads." Acton later left and told people to delete Facebook. Eleven years after the acquisition, the ads arrived anyway.
Where the ads actually show up
Meta launched three things at once, and only two of them are ads in the normal sense. Status ads are full-screen placements that slot between the status updates you already watch. Promoted Channels are paid visibility inside the Channels directory, so a creator or brand can buy their way higher when you browse. The third, channel subscriptions, is a monthly fee creators can charge followers, which is monetisation rather than advertising.
Rollout has been gradual and region by region, so your app may look different from your cousin's in another country.
| Part of WhatsApp | Ads here? | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Chats tab and individual chats | No | Personal and group messages stay free of ads |
| Voice and video calls | No | No placements |
| Status (Updates tab) | Yes | Full-screen ads between contacts' status updates |
| Channels directory | Yes | Promoted channels surfaced in browse and search |
| Channel feeds | No ads, but paid tiers | Creators can charge a monthly subscription |
What data targets these ads
Meta's position is that your messages are not the input. Personal chats, calls and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, and Meta says it does not read them to build ad targeting. The signals it does use are coarser but still useful to advertisers.
The lever most people miss is Accounts Center. If you have added WhatsApp to the same Accounts Center as your Facebook or Instagram profile, your ad preferences from those platforms flow across, and targeting gets much sharper. If you have not linked them, WhatsApp is working with far less.
You cannot switch these ads off. You can reduce how well aimed they are.
- Your city, country and app language
- The channels you follow inside WhatsApp
- How you interact with ads you have already seen
- Your Facebook and Instagram ad preferences, if those accounts are linked through Accounts Center
- Unlinking WhatsApp from Accounts Center in Settings limits the last of these
India, the EU, and why your app may still look ad-free
India is WhatsApp's largest market by a wide margin, with well over 500 million users, so it is the single biggest prize in this rollout. It is also the market with the most awkward regulatory history for exactly this kind of advertising.
In November 2024, the Competition Commission of India fined Meta about 213 crore rupees and ordered that WhatsApp must not share user data with other Meta companies for advertising purposes for five years. In early 2025, the NCLAT stayed that specific data-sharing restriction while the appeal proceeds. The fine stood. The point is that the pipe between WhatsApp and Meta's wider ad machine has been contested in Indian courts, not quietly assumed.
Europe went the other way. After engagement with Ireland's Data Protection Commission, Meta pushed the Updates tab ads in the EU to 2026. So if a friend in Dublin says they have never seen an ad on WhatsApp, they are not imagining it.
The WhatsApp ad that already mattered: Click to WhatsApp
Here is what most coverage of the June 2025 announcement missed. WhatsApp has been carrying advertising weight for years through Click to WhatsApp ads, the Facebook and Instagram placements that open a chat window with a business instead of sending someone to a website. Meta has repeatedly called business messaging one of its fastest growing revenue lines, and India is one of the heaviest users of it. That ad format never appeared inside WhatsApp at all, which is why people kept answering "no" to this question.
For a business, Status ads are a new place to buy attention. Click to WhatsApp is a place to buy conversations, and conversations are harder. A furniture showroom in Jaipur that runs a 30,000 rupee campaign can land 400 chats in a week, and most of those chats die because nobody replied inside ten minutes, or because a human spent the afternoon typing the same three answers about delivery timelines and EMI options.
That is an operations problem wearing a marketing costume. The fix is a qualification layer on top of your inbox: an assistant that answers repetitive questions instantly, captures pincode, budget and intent, routes the serious buyer to a human and drops everything into your CRM without anyone copying rows into a sheet. If you are spending on ads that end in a WhatsApp chat, that layer is worth more than another 10,000 rupees of reach, and building it for your specific flow is exactly what AI Automations is for. Send us your current enquiry flow and we will tell you what can be automated and what genuinely needs a person.
So: WhatsApp has ads, they live in the Updates tab, and they are the less interesting half of the story. The half that changes money is the chat window itself.
FAQs
1. Can I turn off ads in WhatsApp?
No, there is no setting to remove ads from the Updates tab. You can make them less targeted by unlinking WhatsApp from your Meta Accounts Center, and you will see fewer if you rarely open Status or follow channels.
2. Will ads ever appear inside my WhatsApp chats?
Meta has said personal chats, groups and calls will stay free of ads, and those messages remain end-to-end encrypted. As of now, ads are limited to Status and the Channels directory in the Updates tab.
3. Does WhatsApp read my messages to show me ads?
Meta says no, because personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted and it cannot read them. Targeting uses your country, city, language, the channels you follow, and your Facebook or Instagram ad preferences if those accounts are linked.
4. Do WhatsApp Business users see ads, or show them?
WhatsApp Business accounts see Status ads like any other user. To advertise, businesses typically buy Click to WhatsApp ads on Facebook and Instagram, which open a chat with them, or now buy Status and promoted channel placements through Meta's ad tools.
5. Why did WhatsApp say it would never have ads?
Founders Jan Koum and Brian Acton built WhatsApp on a paid-subscription model and published a 2012 post explaining why they refused advertising. Meta acquired the app in 2014, dropped the subscription fee, and introduced ads in the Updates tab in June 2025.
6. Are WhatsApp ads live in India?
Yes, the Updates tab rollout covers India, though it has been phased and not every user sees it at the same time. Separately, the Competition Commission of India fined Meta in 2024 over WhatsApp data sharing for advertising, and parts of that order have been contested before the NCLAT.
